HVAC Tips For Saving Energy The Fall and Winter

Post-season baseball, resetting the clocks, watching Florida-Georgia & other great college football games, being bombarded with all of the holiday advertising, designing your family’s holiday card…it seems that we are finally leaving the dog days of summer and are entering fall!

The changing of the seasons from the summer to autumn generally affects Floridians a bit differently than it does for other Americans. We may not get the extreme, consistent cold temperatures or snow here in the Sunshine State. However, the months from October to March does feature cooler temperatures and drier air. These are certainly issues that could affect the performance of your HVAC system and must be addressed in order to ensure maximum home or business energy savings. With this in mind, we have put together a list of tips that you can utilize to ensure maximum energy savings throughout the fall and winter months.

Adjust your thermostat
Having to change your clocks is the perfect reminder for adjusting the settings on your thermostat. When you are asleep or out of the house, you’ll want to turn your thermostat back up to 15° for those hours. Over time, this can save around 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills, according to energy.gov. Hint, a new and user-friendly thermostat can make it easy to adjust your thermostat’s settings.

Try running your heater
It has probably been several months since you’ve had to use your heater. That’s why you should go ahead and run it. If you’re heat doesn’t come on at all, you have a problem. If your heater works, but you think it smells like something is burning – everything is ok! It’s normal and the smell will quickly go away.

Replace your AC filter
You want to replace your AC filters regularly. This is the easiest chore you can perform in attempting to maintain your HVAC system. We recommend at least checking your AC filters once a month to see if they need to be changed. By doing this on a regular basis, your energy bills could easily be reduced by 5%.

Take advantage of heat from the sun
Do you have south-facing windows? If so, keep your curtains open during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home. Consequently, keep these curtains drawn at night to reduce the chill you may feel from drafty windows.

Schedule a service for your HVAC system
